With its first commercial flight on 1st January 1946, Heathrow Airport found itself in the position of supplying passenger facilities to an ever-increasing demand. Therefore, to ease the traffic congestion that was arising, Terminal 2 was built and opened by Her Majesty, the Queen in 1955.

Another terminal was then commissioned and built to handle long-haul flights, then known as the Oceanic terminal but now as Terminal 3. This was then followed by the opening of Terminal 1 in 1968. However, there was to be a fourth terminal building to be constructed in 1986 to ease the ever-growing congestion in the central region which, true to form, was called Terminal 4.
